The Eling Tide Mill Experience, Totton is the historic Grade II* listed Eling Tide Mill; Visitor Centre; and the open spaces encompassing Bartley Water and Goatee Beach.
Eling Tide Mill is a water mill that harnesses the power of the tide to grind wheat into flour. Situated on the edge of Southampton Water beside the renowned New Forest - there has been a mill on this site for over 900 years.
It ceased to be a working mill in the 1940's, but had the good fortune to survive until it was restored between 1975 and 1980, at which time it reopened as both a working mill and a museum to form part of our industrial heritage.
In 2015, the mill closed again to undergo further restoration and refurbishment with funding from HLF, Totton & Eling Town Council and New Forest District Council, re-opening and rebranding in 2018 as Eling Tide Mill Experience.
It is one of the only fully working and productive tide mills in the United Kingdom, producing flour as it has throughout the last millennium. In fact one of a handful of tide mills in the world still producing flour on a regular basis.
Once you have visited the mill and learned about how it works, you can pop across the road to The Visitor Centre opposite which houses the Discovery Room and find more about the mill and its history and also get hands on with one of our interactive models, including hand querns to mill some flour. This forms part of the admission to the Eling Tide Mill Experience (you can visit either site first).
You can also find the Activity Room, this multi purpose space is where we provide most of our family activities and events (at selected times). See our events page on our website (link above) for details of what's on. The Activity Room is also offered to groups who have booked a visit for food and refreshments.
Education visits are also offered use of this space as part of their visit and the room can be used as a base or to eat lunch.
Our café provides high-quality casual dining in a light spacious area within the same building as the visitor centre, opposite Eling Tide Mill. Free to enter, it is ideal for morning coffee, light lunches or afternoon tea - whether or not you are visiting Eling Tide Mill Experience. We serve a selection of speciality teas and coffees, homemade cakes and sandwiches. Look out for items made with our flour!
