Swallow Falls - Discover Spectacular Waterfalls and Beautiful Woodland Scenery in Eryri National Park, North Wales

Swallow Falls is one of the most famous and beautiful waterfalls in Wales, situated near the picturesque village of Betws-y-Coed in Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. Surrounded by ancient woodland and dramatic mountain scenery, this spectacular natural attraction is a popular destination for visitors exploring North Wales.

Known in Welsh as Rhaeadr Ewynnol, Swallow Falls is formed by the River Llugwy as it cascades over a series of rocky ledges into a narrow wooded gorge. The powerful rushing water creates an impressive display, particularly following periods of heavy rainfall when the falls are at their most dramatic.

The waterfall consists of several beautiful cascades rather than a single vertical drop. Visitors can admire the rushing water from designated viewing platforms, which provide excellent opportunities to appreciate the natural beauty of the gorge.

Swallow Falls is particularly popular with photographers and nature lovers. The combination of tumbling water, moss-covered rocks and surrounding woodland creates a beautiful setting throughout the year.

During spring and summer, the surrounding trees and vegetation provide a lush green backdrop to the falls. Autumn is especially attractive, when the woodland transforms into shades of gold, orange and red, while winter often brings powerful water flows and atmospheric scenery.

The main viewing area is located beside the A5 road, approximately two miles west of Betws-y-Coed. A series of steps and pathways leads visitors down towards several viewpoints overlooking the waterfall.

The different viewing platforms offer spectacular perspectives of the cascades, allowing visitors to see the water rushing through the rocky gorge. The sound of the falls and the peaceful woodland surroundings make this a memorable stop when exploring the national park.

Swallow Falls is a paid attraction, with a small admission charge for access to the main viewing platforms. Entry is normally operated through a payment gate, and visitors should check the current admission arrangements before travelling.

The waterfall can generally be visited throughout the year, although access may be affected by severe weather, maintenance or safety conditions. Daylight visits are recommended to enjoy the views and navigate the pathways safely.

Parking is available in the surrounding area, including roadside parking near the entrance where permitted. Spaces can be limited during busy periods, particularly in summer and on public holidays.

The pathways leading to the viewing platforms include steep steps, uneven surfaces and sections that may become slippery in wet weather. As a result, the main viewing area is not suitable for all wheelchair users or visitors with reduced mobility.

Visitors should wear suitable footwear and remain behind the safety barriers at all times. The rocks and riverbanks can be extremely slippery, and entering the water or climbing beyond designated viewing areas is dangerous.

Dogs may be permitted within the viewing area, but visitors should check current arrangements at the entrance. Dogs should remain on short leads because of the steep drops, steps and fast-flowing water.

Swallow Falls is located close to several beautiful walking routes through the surrounding woodland and countryside. The nearby River Llugwy and Gwydir Forest provide additional opportunities for exploring the spectacular landscapes of Eryri National Park.

The charming village of Betws-y-Coed is just a short drive away and offers cafes, restaurants, independent shops and outdoor equipment stores. The village is also a popular starting point for walking and exploring the mountains and forests of North Wales.

Nearby attractions include the beautiful Fairy Glen, Conwy Falls, the historic Pont-y-Pair Bridge and the spectacular landscapes surrounding Capel Curig. Visitors can also explore the wider Eryri National Park, with its magnificent mountains, lakes and scenic walking trails.

With its powerful cascades, atmospheric woodland setting and spectacular natural beauty, Swallow Falls is an unforgettable destination for photographers, families and nature lovers visiting Betws-y-Coed and North Wales.
