Let us introduce you to our locally sourced Westmorland breakfast!
The Hollies B&B is located in the historic market town of Appleby with its castle. It was the former county town of Westmorland, with a court that had the same status as the high court in London, it is still used as the local council chamber. If you are here on a Tuesday morning our local Blue Badge Guide leads an excellent tour round the town.
Appleby Castle is privately owned but open to the public. Tours can be booked online or at the Tourist Information office.
If you wish to sit back, relax and watch the scenery drift by, then hop on board the picturesque Settle - Carlisle Railway which stops at Appleby. It winds through the Yorkshire Dales and Eden Valley. Steam trains use this line too a few times each week with the Flying Scotsman a quite regular visitor. Appleby Golf Course is just down the road with stunning views to the Lake District and over to the Yorkshire Dales. The restaurant has a good reputation too.
Visit historic sites that include Neolithic stone circles, Bronze Age settlements, Roman forts, other magnificent castles (such as Brougham & Brough Castles), ancient churches, historic houses and beautiful gardens.
Appleby is famous for its annual Horse Fair - the largest of its kind in the World and has been held here since 1685 under the protection of a charter granted by James II. Please be aware that most accommodation is fully booked well in advance.
We're surrounded by wonderful open countryside with stunning views, in an unspoiled, peaceful part of the North of England. It's great for walkers. High Cup Nick is well known classic with breathtaking views in all directions. Cross Fell, the highest fell of the Pennines, dominates the local skyline. The Pennine Way runs through the area locally at Dufton, just a couple of miles up the road. The new Wainwright's Pennine Journey passes within 200yds of us. The Dales Highway & Lady Anne's Way both end in Appleby.
The Eden Valley is the perfect location to try many outdoor activities. Cyclists are discovering Eden with its quiet country lanes and the increasingly popular C2C cycle route. We are on the crossing point of 2 national cycleways. 68 & 71.
We have a dedicated stone outbuilding for bicycle storage and a wet entrance/boot room with shower (mainly used by our Spaniel).
