Castle Farm is a tranquil and picturesque development of holiday cottages and glamping accommodation in between Ellesmere and Oswestry in the beautiful North Shropshire countryside.
There are two detached cottages, one of which is fully accessible for disabled guests, sleep 4-5, with both of them having their own private patios with hot tubs. Whilst those who prefer a more rustic stay have the choice of four wooden pods, including one with a private hot tub, and our charming new shepherd's hut - all with electricity, the usual caravan-style mod-cons and use of a smart new shower block.
Woodpecker cottage is four star non-smoking - Converted from a barn in 2012, has three bedrooms (an en-suite double room and cosy single room upstairs, and a wheelchair-friendly twin room - with neighbouring wet room, featuring grab rails and a shower seat - downstairs), sleeping up to five. Elsewhere, there's a full-size kitchen, lounge and dining area, whilst outside you'll find a self-contained patio garden with private hot tub.
Nuthatch Cottage is four-star and non-smoking - Also converted from a barn in 2012, has two bedrooms (an en-suite double room upstairs, and an en-suite twin room downstairs), sleeping up to four. Elsewhere, there's a full-size kitchen, lounge and dining area, whilst outside you'll find a self-contained patio garden with private hot tub.
Up to three well-behaved dogs (depending on size) are welcome at no extra cost, so long as they're exercised away from the holiday area - there is a field in which they can have a run, whilst there are plenty of quiet country walks from outside the farm gate. When indoors, dogs must be kept away from the bedrooms and sofa, and never left unattended in your cottage. As for the little ones of a two-legged variety, if you're bringing young children, high chairs are available to hire free of charge.
In addition to their four glamping pods, they now have Bluebell, a cosy shepherd's hut with a double bed and sofa bed, sleeping up to four. This was built and installed in 2018.
The glamping pods were installed in June 2017 and come in three different levels Beech and Oak are standard pods, Willow is a standard pod with its own private hot tub, whilst Ash is our posh pod with a separate sofa. All of the standard pods sleep up to four, either as two single beds or one quadruple bed, whilst the posh pod sleeps two on a proper double bed. Generally, you can bring up to two well-behaved dogs too.
You need to bring your own bedding (except for stays in Bluebell and Ash), towels and anything else you would normally take camping (Bluebell has crockery and cutlery, though). Basically, they provide your 'tent' with a few useful extras - a fridge, toaster, kettle, microwave, electric fire and WiFi, as well as tea, coffee, milk and biscuits.
The showers and washing-up facilities are in a neighbouring block, built in 2017, and also feature a disabled wet-room. There's a communal lounge too.
All five glamping units are in a field adjacent to a picturesque dingle, with overflying buzzards and views of the local church, and each come with their own picnic table opposite. BBQ's are welcome - just keep them on the gravelled areas, please.
Cooking outdoors is part and parcel of a camping trip. However, with a car full of stuff, there probably isn't room to bring the ingredients for breakfast or tea, and, after a long drive, the last thing you want to do is to go food shopping. That's where food packs come in. All the food is sourced locally, from Ellesmere - the meat packs from B Hawkins & Sons Family Butchers, and the breakfast packs from Vermeulens Bakery & Deli. Hawkins have been in business since 1873, whilst Vermeulens first opened their doors in 1968 - so both of them know a thing or two about great-tasting food.
To keep down costs and keep things nice and simple, you can't change, or swap around, any of the packs items, but - with a choice of three packs for your evening meal - there should be something for all meat eaters. Just order and pay by the Tuesday prior to your stay, and the food pack will be waiting in your fridge for your arrival (don't forget, all of the glamping units have a fridge). Disposable barbecues can be supplied, or you're welcome to bring your own, but, either way, please keep them to the gravelled areas.
Then, when the sun has gone down, or for cooler autumn nights, how about hiring a fire pit? They even supply the marshmallows! And if you're coming for a special occasion - birthday, anniversary or just a romantic getaway - ask about the boxed bouquets of flowers, available from just £25.
Dogs are welcome on the glamping site, usually up to two per unit. Please ask if any different.
Castle Farm is located between Ellesmere and Oswestey in the North Shropshire Countryside.
The medieval county town of Shrewsbury to the south, and the Roman city of Chester to the north, are both just a 45-minute drive away. The Welsh border, bringing with it numerous attractions and some fantastic scenery, is just a little over a mile from Castle Farm too.
