Mourne Mountains - Discover Northern Ireland’s highest and most iconic mountain range.
The Mourne Mountains, often simply known as the Mournes, are a spectacular granite mountain range in County Down, forming one of Northern Ireland’s most breathtaking landscapes. Home to the highest peaks in Northern Ireland and the province of Ulster, the range attracts walkers, climbers, photographers and outdoor enthusiasts from around the world.
The highest summit, Slieve Donard, rises to 850 metres above sea level and rewards those who reach the top with magnificent panoramic views across the Irish Sea, the Mourne coastline and, on clear days, as far as the Isle of Man and Scotland. The mountains are renowned for their rugged beauty, tranquil valleys, crystal-clear rivers and distinctive granite tors.
Much of the Mournes lies within the Mournes Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), helping to protect its exceptional scenery, wildlife and cultural heritage. Parts of the landscape are cared for by the National Trust, preserving this remarkable environment for future generations.
One of the area's most famous features is the Mourne Wall, an impressive 22-mile dry-stone wall that crosses fifteen mountain summits. Originally built to enclose the Silent Valley Reservoir catchment, it now serves as a popular navigation aid for hikers exploring the mountains.
Whether you're tackling challenging mountain hikes, enjoying gentle countryside walks or simply taking in the spectacular scenery, the Mourne Mountains offer unforgettable experiences throughout every season.
Plan your visit to the Mourne Mountains and discover one of Northern Ireland’s finest outdoor destinations.
