Carnasserie Castle - impressive 16th century tower house overlooking the historic landscape of Kilmartin Glen.
Carnasserie Castle is a striking ruined tower house situated above Kilmartin Glen in Argyll. Built during the 1560s for John Carswell, Bishop of the Isles, the castle was designed as a sophisticated residence rather than a heavily fortified stronghold. Its elevated position provides impressive views across the surrounding countryside and makes it a fascinating addition to a visit to the archaeological landscape of Kilmartin.
The castle is an excellent example of Renaissance-influenced Scottish architecture, combining a traditional tower house with a spacious adjoining hall block. Visitors can explore the atmospheric ruins and discover surviving architectural details including fireplaces, windows and stonework that reveal the scale and character of the original residence. The castle was later associated with the Campbells of Auchinbreck before being damaged during the political unrest of the late 17th century.
Managed by Historic Environment Scotland, Carnasserie Castle is free to visit and can be reached on foot from the parking area near the A816. The approach involves an uphill walk across uneven ground, and access within the ruins includes steps and uneven surfaces, so the site may not be suitable for visitors with limited mobility. Its combination of history, architecture and panoramic views makes Carnasserie Castle a rewarding place to explore while visiting Kilmartin Glen.
