Janet's Foss - Discover one of the Yorkshire Dales' most enchanting waterfalls.
Janet's Foss is a beautiful limestone waterfall located near the picturesque village of Malham in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Hidden within ancient woodland, the waterfall cascades over a limestone ledge into a deep, crystal-clear pool, creating one of the area's most peaceful and photogenic natural beauty spots.
The waterfall is formed where Gordale Beck flows over a tufa-covered limestone outcrop before plunging into the pool below. Historically, the pool was used for sheep dipping, an important annual event that became a social gathering for the local community.
According to local legend, Janet's Foss is home to Janet, or Jennet, the Fairy Queen, who is said to live in a cave hidden behind the waterfall. The word "Foss" comes from the Old Norse language, meaning waterfall, reflecting the area's rich Viking heritage.
Janet's Foss is a popular stop on walks between Malham Village, Gordale Scar and Malham Cove. Its tranquil setting, fascinating folklore and beautiful woodland surroundings make it a favourite destination for walkers, photographers and families exploring the Yorkshire Dales.
The waterfall also gained wider recognition as the filming location for the fictional Molkham Falls in the 2006 British independent film
Waterfall.
Plan your visit to Janet's Foss and enjoy one of North Yorkshire's most magical natural attractions.
