Longis Bay - Discover Alderney's Longest Sandy Beach, Historic Fortifications and Beautiful Coastal Wildlife

Longis Bay is a beautiful sandy beach situated on the south-eastern coast of Alderney in the Channel Islands. Stretching for approximately half a mile, it is the longest sandy beach on the island and a popular destination for families, walkers and nature lovers. The gently sloping shoreline makes it particularly appealing for swimming, paddling and kayaking when conditions are suitable, while low tide reveals extensive sands and fascinating rock pools. One of the bay's most distinctive features is the enormous concrete anti-tank wall constructed during the German occupation in the Second World War. This historic defensive structure curves around the bay above the high-water mark and provides a fascinating reminder of Alderney's wartime history.

Longis Bay is also surrounded by remarkable historical landmarks, including the Roman Fort, known as The Nunnery, which dates back to the 4th century. Originally built to defend the nearby anchorage, the fort was later adapted and reused during several periods of the island's history. Visitors can explore this important heritage attraction and discover its surviving Roman walls, historical displays and Second World War defences. Beyond the beach lies Longis Nature Reserve, Alderney's largest terrestrial nature reserve, featuring coastal grasslands, freshwater ponds, wetlands and beautiful walking trails. The reserve is an excellent destination for birdwatching, with dedicated bird hides overlooking habitats used by resident and migratory birds. Seasonal wildflowers and other wildlife add to the area's natural appeal, making it particularly enjoyable for photographers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Longis Bay is free to visit and accessible throughout the year, with parking and public toilets available near The Nunnery end of the beach. A large access ramp provides a convenient route onto the sand, making this one of Alderney's more accessible beaches, although movement across the sand itself may be challenging for some visitors. The surrounding nature reserve offers additional walking opportunities, with dogs permitted under effective control. Visitors should respect wildlife habitats and check local beach signage for any restrictions. Nearby attractions include the Alderney Lighthouse, Mannez Nature Reserve and the island's beautiful coastal walking routes. With its golden sands, fascinating military heritage and outstanding natural surroundings, Longis Bay is a wonderful destination for visitors exploring Alderney and the Channel Islands.
