Merlin's Cave

Merlin's Cave, Tintagel, Cornwall, England

Merlin's Cave - A legendary sea cave beneath Tintagel Castle.

Merlin's Cave is a fascinating natural and historic landmark located beneath Tintagel Castle on the north coast of Cornwall. Steeped in Arthurian legend, the cave is said to be linked to the wizard Merlin and was famously described by Alfred, Lord Tennyson in his work Idylls of the King, where it is associated with the story of King Arthur.

The cave stretches approximately 100 metres, running completely through Tintagel Island from Tintagel Haven on the east side to West Cove on the west. Formed by marine erosion, it cuts through slate and volcanic rock, creating a dramatic and atmospheric setting shaped by the power of the sea.

Visitors can explore the cave at low tide, when the sandy floor is exposed, and the full length becomes accessible. At high tide, the cave fills with water, so timing your visit is essential. Access requires care, as part of the steps leading down have been washed away, and the final section involves climbing over rocks to reach the beach.

Plan your visit to Merlin's Cave and experience one of Cornwall's most iconic and mythical coastal locations, where natural beauty meets ancient legend.
