Castle Espie Wilfowl Centre

Castle Espie Wilfowl Centre, Comber, County Down, Northern Ireland

WWT Castle Espie Wetland Centre - Discover Northern Ireland’s spectacular wetland wildlife.

Situated on the shores of the beautiful Strangford Lough, just three miles south of Comber in County Down, WWT Castle Espie Wetland Centre is one of Northern Ireland’s premier wildlife attractions. Managed by the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT), the reserve forms part of the internationally important Strangford Lough Ramsar Site and provides a haven for thousands of wetland birds throughout the year.

The reserve is particularly famous as an early winter home for almost the entire Nearctic population of pale-bellied brent geese. Visitors can also see a wide variety of other species, including nene geese, red-breasted geese, goldeneyes and rosy-billed pochards, alongside many native ducks, swans and wading birds.

Families will find plenty to enjoy, with opportunities to feed the ducks using specially provided nutritious grain, allowing children to interact safely with the birds. The popular Wildwood Adventure Play Area features climbing structures, den-building activities and natural play spaces, while the indoor play area offers year-round fun whatever the weather.

The reserve also features scenic walking trails, bird hides, seasonal events, wildlife exhibits and the Kingfisher Kitchen café, serving breakfast, lunches, drinks and homemade treats throughout the day.

WWT Castle Espie is open seven days a week, 363 days a year, closing only on 24 and 25 December. Visitors are encouraged to allow around three hours to fully explore the reserve. Opening times vary seasonally, and admission charges apply, so it is recommended to check the official website before travelling.

Plan your visit to WWT Castle Espie Wetland Centre and enjoy an unforgettable day surrounded by wildlife, nature and family-friendly adventures.
