The Bellavista Hotel has a colourful history which adds character to the building and brings it to life. Dr James Roche Verling, lived in the house for a number of years and is best known for being the personal physician to Napoleon from 1818 to 1820. The Carbery Family, renowned for their relief work during the great Irish Famine, bought the house and lived here until 1914. In 1916 Bellavista House became the property of the Diocese of Cloyne and was officially opened by Bishop Robert Brown as the Sacred Heart Noviciate. Father Browne, a nephew of the Bishop, was a first class passenger on the Titanic from Southampton to Cobh (or Queenstown as it was called at the time) and he frequently stayed at the Bellavista House. Many of his photographs were used by the international media following the tragic sinking of the Titanic. Around 1931 the Sisters of Mercy moved out of the Bellavista and the house became a private dwelling and divided into an upper and lower house. This remained the case for many years but today the building is reunited as one and refurbished to give you all the comforts of modern life while surrounded by the character of such an interesting building.
