Prehen House

Prehen House, Prehen, Londonderry, Northern Ireland

Prehen House - Discover Georgian elegance, family history and one of Ireland’s most famous love stories.

Prehen House is a privately owned 18th-century Irish Georgian house located at Prehen in County Londonderry. Believed to have been designed by local architect Michael Priestley, the house was built in 1740 for Andrew Knox, MP for Donegal, following his marriage to Prehen heiress Honoria Tomkins.

The Knox family remained closely connected with Prehen House for around 170 years. After the property was seized by the government following the First World War, it was later returned to another branch of the Knox family, preserving its strong historical and personal links.

Recognised as a Grade A listed building of national importance, Prehen House is admired for its Georgian architecture, historic interiors and fascinating family history. The house is also associated with the tragic legend of Half Hung MacNaghten, one of Ireland’s best-known tales of romance, obsession and betrayal.

Visitors can hear the story of Ann Knox, discover the history of the house and learn more about the people who shaped its past during guided visits led by the current owner, Colin Peck.
