Hafod Estate - Explore Historic Woodland Gardens, Waterfalls and Scenic Walking Trails in Mid Wales
Hafod Estate is a beautiful historic landscape situated near Pontrhydygroes in the Ystwyth Valley, Ceredigion, Mid Wales. Managed by the National Trust, this remarkable 200-hectare estate is considered one of Europe's finest examples of an 18th-century Picturesque landscape.
The estate was famously developed by Thomas Johnes, who transformed the rugged countryside into an extraordinary landscape of woodland gardens, waterfalls, bridges and scenic walking routes. Today, visitors can discover the beauty of this historic setting while exploring the peaceful countryside of the Cambrian Mountains.
Hafod Estate offers more than eight miles of waymarked walking trails, with five main routes ranging from gentle woodland strolls to more challenging walks through the Ystwyth Gorge. The trails pass through beautiful forests, alongside rivers and waterfalls, and across restored historic bridges.
Highlights include the spectacular Peiran Falls, the picturesque Alpine Bridge and the historic Gothic Arcade. Visitors can also explore Mrs Johnes' Flower Garden, with its colourful planting and restored stone gateway, and Mariamne's Garden, originally created as a secluded retreat.
The estate is particularly appealing to nature lovers and photographers, with opportunities to spot woodland birds, seasonal wildflowers and other wildlife. The changing colours of the landscape make it an attractive destination throughout the year.
Hafod Estate is free to visit and is open daily from dawn until dusk. The car park is also accessible during these hours, making the estate a convenient destination for walkers exploring the countryside near Aberystwyth and Devil's Bridge.
Visitor facilities include a car park, picnic areas, a temporary toilet near the church and a volunteer-run second-hand bookshop. The bookshop generally opens from 11am to 3pm, depending on volunteer availability, and accepts cash only.
Dogs are welcome throughout the estate. They must be kept on leads around livestock and within the gardens, although they may be allowed off lead under close control in woodland areas.
Accessible parking is available near Mrs Johnes' Flower Garden and the Estate Office, with accessible paths leading to the flower garden and picnic area. However, many of the woodland trails involve steep slopes, steps and uneven terrain.
Visitors should wear suitable walking footwear and check current trail information before travelling. The Cavern Cascade route remains closed, and some paths may be affected by weather conditions or conservation work.
With its magnificent woodland scenery, historic gardens, cascading waterfalls and fascinating landscape heritage, Hafod Estate is a wonderful destination for walkers, families and nature enthusiasts exploring Ceredigion.
