Blaenafon Cheddar Company - award-winning handmade Welsh cheese in a World Heritage town.
We are a tiny, family-run cheesemaker producing some of Wales' most awarded artisan cheddars by hand. Located on Broad Street in Blaenavon, the Blaenafon Cheddar Company crafts distinctive Welsh cheeses using traditional methods, free from artificial colourings and preservatives. Flavours are inspired by local ales, whiskies, and ciders - including the famous Taffy Apple Gold Medal winner.
Visitors can watch the cheesemaking process, browse the shop, and sample a range of cheddars matured in the historic cellars of The Lion Hotel, home of the Chartist Riots. Set within the Blaenavon World Heritage Site, it's a unique food experience surrounded by rich industrial heritage. Nearby attractions include Big Pit National Coal Museum, Blaenavon Ironworks, and the scenic Brecon Beacons.
Open to the public Monday to Friday, 10am-3pm (please call
07886 388573 to confirm, as the team may be out on business). During November and December, open Saturdays 10am-2pm. We also offer private tastings, and for coach tours we provide talks and Welsh lunches, dinners or afternoon teas at our partners - The Blaenavon Workman's Hall for presentations and tastings, and The Lion Hotel and Restaurant for the food experience. Booking essential.
