Castle Tioram - Discover a Historic Highland Castle Surrounded by the Beautiful Waters of Loch Moidart

Castle Tioram is a dramatic ruined medieval castle standing on the small tidal island of Eilean Tioram, where Loch Moidart meets the sea on Scotland's west coast. Surrounded by beautiful Highland scenery, the castle is one of the most atmospheric historic landmarks in Lochaber, with its weathered stone walls rising above the rocky shoreline. Traditionally associated with the powerful Clan MacDonald of Clanranald, Castle Tioram served as an important stronghold in the western Highlands and remains a striking reminder of Scotland's turbulent medieval past.

The castle is believed to date largely from the 13th century, although its history and development span several centuries. It became an important seat of the Clanranald chiefs and played a significant role in the history of the western Highlands and Islands. Today, the roofless ruins retain much of their imposing outer structure, creating a memorable sight against the surrounding mountains, woodland and tidal waters. The castle is particularly popular with photographers, with the changing light and tides providing beautiful views throughout the day.

Visitors can admire Castle Tioram from the nearby shoreline, where the castle's island setting provides excellent opportunities for photography and enjoying the peaceful surroundings of Loch Moidart. At low tide, a sandy and rocky causeway connects Eilean Tioram to the mainland, although visitors should check tide times carefully before attempting to cross. Entry into the castle ruins is prohibited because of the risk of falling masonry, but the exterior can still be appreciated from a safe distance. The surrounding area offers scenic coastal walks and opportunities to explore the unspoilt landscapes of the Ardnamurchan and Moidart region.
