Donnington Castle - Explore a Historic Medieval Castle in Berkshire
Donnington Castle is a fascinating medieval landmark situated on a hill overlooking Newbury in Berkshire. Built in the late 14th century for Sir Richard Abberbury, the castle was once an impressive fortified residence. Today, its magnificent twin-towered gatehouse remains standing, offering visitors a glimpse into England's medieval past and beautiful views across the surrounding countryside.
The castle played an important role during the English Civil War, when Royalist forces defended it against Parliamentary troops. Following a lengthy siege, much of the castle was demolished in 1646, leaving the striking gatehouse as its most recognisable feature. Visitors can explore the surrounding earthworks, discover the castle's turbulent history through information panels and enjoy peaceful walks across the grassy grounds.
Managed by English Heritage, Donnington Castle is free to visit and offers a wonderful outdoor experience for history enthusiasts, families and walkers. Limited free parking is available nearby, followed by a short uphill walk to the ruins. The grounds are uneven in places, which may make access difficult for wheelchair users. Dogs on leads are welcome. Nearby attractions include Newbury, Shaw House and the beautiful Berkshire countryside.
