Glencoe National Nature Reserve

Glencoe National Nature Reserve, Ballachulish, Argyll, Scotland

Glencoe National Nature Reserve - dramatic Highland landscapes, wildlife and walking trails in one of Scotland's most famous glens.

Glencoe National Nature Reserve protects one of Scotland's most spectacular landscapes, shaped by ancient volcanic activity and glaciers over millions of years. Towering mountains, deep valleys, waterfalls and open moorland create the dramatic scenery for which Glencoe is famous, while the reserve provides important habitats for a wide variety of Highland wildlife.

Visitors can explore the landscape on walking routes ranging from shorter trails to challenging mountain adventures, with opportunities to discover woodland, rivers and breathtaking viewpoints throughout the glen. Wildlife including red deer and golden eagles can be found within the wider landscape, while the area is also rich in history and is closely associated with the infamous Glencoe Massacre of 1692.

The National Trust for Scotland visitor centre provides an excellent starting point for exploring Glencoe, with exhibitions telling the stories of the landscape, wildlife and people of the glen. The centre includes accessible facilities and routes suitable for visitors with limited mobility, while the surrounding mountain trails vary considerably in difficulty and accessibility. With its combination of natural beauty, wildlife, history and outdoor adventure, Glencoe is one of the most memorable places to visit in the Scottish Highlands.
