Ormiclate Castle

Ormiclate Castle, Ormiclate, Isle of South Uist, Scotland

Ormiclate Castle - Discover the atmospheric ruins of an early 18th century mansion on South Uist.

Ormiclate Castle is a ruined historic mansion situated on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides. Construction began in the early 18th century for Allan MacDonald of Clanranald, replacing an earlier residence on the site. Despite its name, Ormiclate was designed more as an elegant country house than a defensive castle and provides a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Clanranald family during this period of Hebridean history.

The house was occupied for only a short time before being badly damaged by fire in 1715, traditionally said to have occurred on the eve of the Battle of Sheriffmuir during the Jacobite Rising. Today, the roofless stone walls remain as an evocative landmark within the South Uist landscape. Visitors can view the historic ruins and appreciate their remote setting, although care should be taken around the old masonry and uneven ground.
