The Battle of Britain Memorial - historic RAF memorial with interactive exhibitions and Channel views near Folkestone, Kent

The Battle of Britain Memorial is a moving tribute to the brave pilots and aircrew who defended Britain during the summer and autumn of 1940. Situated at Capel-le-Ferne, near Folkestone in Kent, this nationally significant memorial stands on the famous White Cliffs, overlooking the English Channel towards France.

Dedicated to the courageous airmen known as "The Few", the memorial provides a peaceful setting for remembrance, reflection and discovering one of the most important chapters in British history. Visitors can explore the beautifully maintained grounds, admire the spectacular coastal scenery and learn about the extraordinary bravery of those who fought to protect Britain's skies.

At the heart of the site stands the National Memorial, featuring a striking sculpture of a seated airman looking out towards the English Channel. Nearby, the Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall records the names of aircrew known to have flown at least one operational sortie with an accredited RAF squadron or unit during the Battle of Britain. The names are displayed alphabetically, without rank or decoration, recognising the contribution of every individual. Visitors can also see impressive full-size replicas of two legendary fighter aircraft, the Supermarine Spitfire Mk I and Hawker Hurricane Mk I, which played crucial roles in the defence of Britain during 1940.

The Wing, the memorial's distinctive visitor centre, is home to The Scramble Experience, an immersive exhibition that brings the Battle of Britain vividly to life. Combining film presentations, hands-on activities and interactive displays, the experience explores the lives of the pilots, the challenges they faced and the people and systems supporting the RAF's wartime operations. Designed to engage visitors of different ages, it offers a fascinating insight into the events of 1940 and the sacrifices made by The Few.

The Wing also houses a shop and the Cockpit Cafe, where visitors can enjoy refreshments, light meals and afternoon treats while admiring panoramic views across the English Channel. Outdoor balcony seating provides an especially memorable place to appreciate the coastal setting.

The memorial grounds can be accessed on foot throughout the year via the side gate, while the visitor centre, cafe, shop and car park operate seasonal opening hours. From April to October, these facilities generally open between 10am and 5pm, changing to 10am until 4pm from November to March, with Monday closures between November and February.

Admission to The Wing, including The Scramble Experience, is £6 for adults, £5 for concessions and £4 for children aged 5 to 15, with children under five admitted free. Visitors should check current opening arrangements and admission prices before travelling.
