Thor's Cave - Explore a Spectacular Limestone Cavern in the Peak District

Thor's Cave is one of the Peak District's most impressive natural landmarks, situated high above the beautiful Manifold Valley near Wetton in Staffordshire. This remarkable limestone cavern features a huge arched entrance set into a steep hillside, offering breathtaking views across the surrounding countryside. Formed through natural erosion over thousands of years, the cave is also an important archaeological site, with evidence of prehistoric human activity discovered within its chambers.

Visitors can reach Thor's Cave by following a scenic walking route from the village of Wetton or connecting paths through the Manifold Valley. The cave's dramatic entrance, approximately 10 metres high, provides a striking viewpoint overlooking the valley and surrounding limestone hills. Adventurous walkers can explore the accessible entrance chamber, admire the unusual rock formations and enjoy photography opportunities. The surrounding countryside offers additional walking routes, including the popular Manifold Way, which follows the route of a former light railway.

Thor's Cave is free to visit throughout the year, although reaching the entrance requires a steep uphill walk with uneven, rocky and sometimes slippery paths. There are no dedicated facilities at the cave, and visitors should bring suitable footwear and appropriate clothing. The site is unsuitable for wheelchair users and may be challenging for young children or anyone uncomfortable with steep terrain. Nearby attractions include Wetton Mill, the Manifold Valley, Dovedale and the beautiful villages of the Staffordshire Peak District.
