Castle Varrich - Explore the Ruins of a Historic Highland Castle Overlooking the Kyle of Tongue
Castle Varrich is a historic ruined tower house perched on a rocky hilltop overlooking the village of Tongue and the beautiful Kyle of Tongue in Sutherland, in the Scottish Highlands. Believed to date from the 14th or 15th century, the castle is traditionally associated with Clan Mackay, one of the prominent Highland clans of northern Scotland. Its dramatic position offers spectacular views across the surrounding countryside, sea loch and distant mountains, making it a popular destination for walkers, photographers and visitors exploring Scotland's north coast.
Although much of the castle's early history remains uncertain, the surviving stone walls provide a fascinating glimpse into the area's medieval past. The ruins have been carefully stabilised, and a modern metal staircase and viewing platform allow visitors to enjoy elevated views from within the tower. From this vantage point, the sweeping landscape of the Kyle of Tongue, the surrounding hills and the rugged Sutherland coastline can be appreciated, with particularly impressive views on clear days.
Castle Varrich is reached by a scenic walk from the village of Tongue, following a waymarked route through woodland and open hillside. The walk includes some uphill sections and uneven ground, so suitable footwear is recommended. The castle is a rewarding stop for those travelling along the North Coast 500 or exploring the northern Highlands, combining local history with some of the finest panoramic scenery in the area. Visitors should take care around the ruins and check local conditions before setting out, particularly during wet or windy weather.
